Relieve Stuffy Nose

Relieve Stuffy Nose - stuffy nose - nasal congestion - happens when the tissues and blood vessels in the nose swell with the liquid more. Colds, flu, allergies to dust, pollen and pet dander and tobacco smoke can cause irritation of all nasal congestion. For adults and older children stuffy nose is simply annoying and can hinder sleep and comfort for children, food and breathing can be difficult and will require medical attention.

How to Relieve Stuffy Nose

Take oral decongestants that contain pseudoephedrine to reduce swelling of linings of nose and relieve congestion. When taking any medications, read labels, follow instructions and be aware of any allergies. People with high blood pressure should consult their health care provider before taking pseudoephedrine.

If your stuffy nose is caused by allergies, take antihistamines to reduce mucus production. Be sure to take non-drowsy antihistamine during day to avoid sleepiness.

Use mild nasal decongestant spray for less than 3 days to sooyour clogged nose. Do not use this type of spray beyond 3 days because overuse of mild nasal decongestants can be primary cause of nasal congestion due to rebound effect of medicine. Saline drops can be very helpful in soothing nasal congestion and will not cause rebound nasal congestion.

Increase air humidity at home by using ultrasonic vaporizer or cool mist humidifier.

Inhale steam to relieve stuffy nose. To do this, fill pot halfway with water. Let water boil for few minutes and add 1 to 2 tsp. of Vicks Vaporub. Stir for few seconds and then cover pot with lid to trap steam. Turn heat off and place towel on top of your head with rest of it hanging on sides of your shoulder. Open lid and carefully lean over pot. As you do this, cover your head and pot with your towel allowing no steam to escape and breath in steam.
